Are women domino dunces?
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Kindly permit the publishing of this open letter to Mr Rey Smith, president of the National Association of Domino Bodies; minister without portfolio for sports in the Office of the Prime Minister, Natalie Neita-Headley, and all female domino players.
I was inflated with ecstasy when I read in The Gleaner of February 15, 2012 that Jamaica will host the 10th World Domino Championship. However, I was equally dismayed when the fourth paragraph of the publication revealed that a female championship will be launched. Such a project must be classified as the pinnacle of gender discrimination for a game that requires the player to sit at a table and demonstrate a particular skill that doesn't demand gender separation.
Let me remind the president and the minister that domino is a game of wit, in other words, a brain game. It is not a body contact sport or any other sport where the strength of the male is normally greater and requires separate gender competition. Therefore, any suggestion or implementation of an international or local female domino championship (except for all-female clubs) is simply stating that women are incapable of competing against men in a brain game.
Finally, it is my view that the females should boycott the proposed championship that sets out to undermine their intelligence.
