Liberated women

Published:Saturday | March 24, 2012 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is now widely accepted that biological parenthood in the traditional nuclear family need not be the be-all and end-all of womanhood. In fact, it is increasingly not so anymore.

Since the introduction of reliable family-planning methods in the 1960s, the oral contraceptive pill opens its door wider to choice.

Women have options that never existed before, because with increasing technology, women no longer need a husband to have children. According to recent statistics, in excess of 80 per cent of children are born to single women. Many older women are having children via adoption or in vitro fertilisation.

The stigma against single motherhood is gone and women are enjoying a new kind of liberation.
