Digicel Group, has acquired Haitian mobile operator, Voilà, from its parent company, US-based Trilogy International Partners, for an undisclosed sum, but will continue to run it as a separate business.

The deal closed March 30. The terms were not disclosed.

Voilà has operated in Haiti since September 1998 and has close to one million customers, Digicel said.

Digicel entered Haiti in 2005, and has built up a subscriber base of 3.5 million in seven years from investments totalling US$600 million.

Last week, Digicel announced that it was building a submarine cable to link Haiti to Jamaica and North America for the delivery of broadband connectivity to the country of some nine million people.

The investment in the 200-kilometre cable will be US$16 million.
