Following a Gleaner article about 35-year-old Andrea Shakes, who was badly burnt by an acidic substance in a random attack, scores of persons have voiced their outrage and many have offered assistance.

"I am heartened and grateful to know that there is a lot more good than evil in the world. With the offers of help that have been coming in, following the article in The Gleaner, I am now more hopeful," Andrea told the newspaper yesterday.

"Thanks very much to all those who have offered to help and to all who have been supportive during my ordeal."

The story, published on Monday, March 26, under the headline 'Horribly disfigured - One woman's fight for her life', highlighted Andrea's six months of struggle after a man unknown to her doused her with acid while she was on her way to work one morning.

She was left with third-degree burns and muscular damage on the left side of her body, from her face down to her leg, and has been undergoing surgery and treatment. She is currently unemployed and still in need of corrective surgery.

For those wanting to assist, contributions can be made to the Jamaica National Building Society account number 11111076.
