A Mexican official says his country has extradited Sinaloa cartel drug suspect Jesus 'The King' Zambada to face charges in the United States.

Zambada is the brother of the Sinaloa cartel capo Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada.

The Mexican official is not authorised to be quoted by name. He says Zambada was put on a plane to the United States (US) on Tuesday afternoon.

A 2009 indictment in a US District Court in New York alleges Zambada operated a continuing criminal enterprise and trafficked drugs.

Zambada was among 16 Sinaloa cartel members arrested in 2008 after a gun battle with police in Mexico City.

He allegedly shipped drugs through Mexico City's international airport, and faces drug-related charges in Mexico.
