Concerned about illegal school transport
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Please allow me space in your paper to get something off my chest. For more than three years, I have been trying to get the relevant authorities to address the problem of children being transported to and from school in private (and illegal) school buses.
After a crash on the Linstead bypass last November, we finally heard that the authorities would do something about this problem. I am still waiting. That vehicle was transporting 14 basic-school children illegally, 10 went to hospital and, to date, one four-year-old passenger has not recovered fully.
The police have recently been out seizing illegal taxis that they say are cutting into the profits of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company. The parents of the four-year-old injured in last year's crash have no insurance money to collect since the vehicle was operating illegally. Shouldn't the police be equally concerned with these vehicles?
