An update on our code

Published:Friday | April 20, 2012 | 12:00 AM

Many readers were angry with us on Sunday. Some took the time to ring us to register their disgust with the publication of a photograph showing a model of a penis in our Outlook magazine.

Readers correctly pointed out that this was in breach of our Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. They correctly noted that the photograph had the potential to "shock and appal". We regret its publication.

We recommit to maintaining the ethical and professional standards contained in our code. Our editorial team has been urged to revisit the commitments made to you regularly to ensure compliance.

We urge you to continue to hold us to these standards.

We will always strive to include all sides relevant to a story and to not exhibit bias in our news coverage; and we will continue to respect the privacy of individuals and recognise that any intrusion has to be justified in the public interest.

You can read our full code of ethics and professional conduct at http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com/editorialpolicy.html.
