Care for the mentally ill

Published:Tuesday | April 24, 2012 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The circumstances of many of our fellow Jamaicans are unacceptable. The situation is desperate. The street people need help!

Many are suffering and some will die for lack of food and care, including urgent medical care. We all need to wake up to the reality of what is happening out there on our streets.

In Kingston and St Andrew, there are hundreds who are in dire need, especially the mentally challenged. The numbers are significant and will increase with the scaling down of the Bellevue Hospital.

The proposed shift to a community mental-health programme, for which adequate provision has not been made, will see more persons on the streets or in our prisons.

Churches, Government, private sector, individuals must get involved. This is a priority. What affects them as Jamaicans affects us all.
