The Jamaica Association of Vintage Artistes and Affiliates has penned a missive speaking about the passing of Tyrone Blake, of Merritone Disco.

Blake passed in the company of family on Sunday.

According to the release, Blake was part of Jamaica's musical history, not simply because Merritone Disco was around long enough to have witnessed the different changes in the musical landscape, but because the famed sound system impacted it.

Blake's funeral is set for Wednesday, May 9 at the Church of the Transfiguration, Meadowbrook Main, and begins at 11 a.m. Interment follows in the Dovecot Cemetery.

JAVAA Friends & Family,

Yet another piece of Jamaica's rich musical legacy, in the form of Tyrone Blake of Merritone Music, has passed on. Called to the higher portals, may his soul rest in peace.

The Merritone musical dynasty has been a key witness and participant in the most wonderful story which is the development of Jamaica's popular music culture since the early 1950s.

The legendary sound system was established by father Val Blake, and continued through sons Trevor, Winston, Tyrone, Monte and a longstanding and loyal support team, represented by the charming Lorna Bess.

Our condolences go out to the entire Merritone Music family in this time of their grief.

Sincerely,

Jamaica Association of Vintage Artistes
