Alternatives to taxi fare hike
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I find hard to digest the call for taxi drivers to get an increase. We all are affected by the harsh economic times, yet we are being led to believe that only taxi drivers are feeling the pinch. I find that awfully hard to believe.
We all have mounting expenses but can't get increases to match them. I think taxi associations should come up with smart ways of conserving on gas and find better ways of serving the public, such as working in certain areas on a shift basis.
That way, at each interval the taxis working in a particular area would have more passengers to carry as the saturation in that area is less, instead of 15 cars carrying 15 persons. This would help ensure more high-density trips instead of burning fuel with only one passenger. It is a fact that an overloaded vehicle consumes more fuel than lighter ones.
