Jamaican high schools had a fine start to the 118th staging of the Penn Relays at the Franklin Field Stadium in Philadelphia yesterday, despite chilly temperatures and consistent rain.
Edwin Allen High's pair of Kimberley Williamson and Danniel Thomas in the high jump and discus, respectively, Chanice Porter of Manchester High in the long jump, and Vere Technical's Shardia Lawrence in the triple jump picked up individual wins while most relay teams advanced to today's finals.
The performance of the day came in the girls' discus where Thomas had a personal best and record throw of 51.02 metres. She broke the old mark of 49.28m set by Alysan Holborson of North Carolina in 2009.
Holmwood Technical's Gleneive Grange also had personal best 50.33m for second while pre-meet favourite, Tara Sue Barnett of Edwin Allen, was third with 49.74m.
Thomas was very delighted with her win.
"I am excited and to know that this is my final year competing for Edwin Allen. To leave on a winning note makes me even happier," said Thomas, who added that she was not surprised by the win.
Williamson came close to the record of 1.85m in winning the high jump with a best of 1.83m.
