I've a beef with patty makers
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I might be creating a controversy on imported beef used in our ubiquitous beef patties.
About two months ago, your publication showed the list of importers who got duty waivers for several months.
However, there was a well-known bakery and retailer of beef patties that had waivers in excess of $4 million to bring beef trimmings into Jamaica.
Hence, I am very much concerned about the health implications of imported beef trimmings used in baking our beef patties.
In the United States, there has been the controversy of beef trimmings associated with 'pink slime' and its deleterious health effects, particularly on children. Just recently, the United States banned 'pink slime' from school lunches. Many grocers and businesses pulled the product from their shelves.
I am requesting the Ministry of Health, the Customs Department and other associated government departments to clarify this health concern regarding the use of imported beef trimmings in our patties.
