Windies just a training team

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I have noticed that the sports journalists in England have been less than complimentary about the West Indies cricket team that is just starting a tour in England.

My recollection is that the team's last tour to England resulted in the West Indies being beaten to such an extent that some persons in England were querying why such a useless tour had been arranged, and what could the English team have gained from such a one-sided affair.

One justification was that it gave the English team a chance to train for the Australians, who would be playing England later that year.

This prompted the following comment: Playing the West Indies as a way of training for the Australians was akin to training for a marathon by taking the dog for a walk.

If we can avoid such a comment this time, I would look on the tour as a success, even if we lose.

Good luck, West Indies!
