Major Richard Reese, new commissioner of Customs
Major Richard Reese brings to the shipping industry strong managerial skills and a solid background in the areas of logistics, finance, intelligence, asset protection and emergency management.
The former army man served as a commissioned military officer in the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) for 13 years, retiring in 1987.
Since retiring from the JDF, Major Reese has served in several capacities in the area of security management including: permanent secretary in the Ministry of National Security, secretary to the Defence Board and Commissioner of Corrections.
His experience, however, is not limited to security, as Major Reese is also a former director general of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management; former general manager of the Home Owners' Building Society and former senior director, regional operations, National Housing Trust.
Additionally, Major Reese has considerable experience working in the social services sector, including senior positions with the Jamaica Urban Poverty Project; chairman, Bellevue Hospital Board; director, Jamaica Fire Brigade and South East Regional Health Authority and managing director of Allied Protection Limited.
He serves the community as a member of the American Society for Industrial Security and the American Corrections Association.
The Wolmer's Boys' School old boy holds an Executive Master of Business Administration degree from the Andreas School of Business at Barry University, Florida. He has also completed an international diploma course in restorative justice at the Theological College, Queens University, Canada; and a project-management principles and practices course at the University of New Orleans, USA; and senior crisis-management course, US State Department Counter Terrorism Programs, Virginia, USA.
Major Reese is also a certified port-facility security officer.
