Treading swiftly - New business offers tyre delivery, fitting
Chad Bryan, Gleaner Writer
Like the soles of the feet which often get worn after long walks or too much standing, so do tyres on a vehicle after taking a beating from harsh driving conditions. While tyre wear may not necessarily be related to bad driving, it is inevitable that tyres will need to be changed, which can be a tedious process.
Tyres 2 U, a small company located on East Street, downtown Kingston, and which began operations in January, offers customers a reliable, mobile tyre-supply service, the cost depending on rim size and number of tyres requested by the customer at any one time. The company supplies tyres for rims between 13 and 20 inches, the cost as low as $5,000 and as high as $43,000 each. Fitting and balancing is part of the package and is free.
A truck used in the operation is equipped with machinery to do balancing, moulding and lifting vehicles to change tyres. Tyre brands offered by the company are Maxxis, Sumitomo, Cheng Shin, Hero and Hankook and a charge of $750 is applied for its services.
Tyres 2 U is owned by Edward Barbar, manager at Phoenix Printery, and supplies tyres to customers across the island. The delivery time ranges from as little as an hour for someone within the Corporate Area and maybe three hours or more outside of Portmore, St Catherine. The time taken to supply customers with tyres may vary according to demand.
Lavern Murray, a Tyres 2 U representative, noted that the company was created based on the needs of professionals who do not have the time to come in and purchase tyres, but can call in and have them brought to their home or office.
