Camelot primed for Epsom Derby
Hot favourite CAMELOT will head the smallest Epsom Derby field for more than a century as nine runners line up for the Investec-sponsored classic over 12 furlongs tomorrow.
Ireland's finest, Aidan O'Brien, conditions the 2000 Guineas winner CAMELOT and will also run stable-mate ASTROLOGY. However, he withdrew IMPERIAL MONARCH, FATHER OF SCIENCE and TOWER ROCK on Thursday.
BONFIRE, MAIN SEQUENCE, MICKDAAM, THOUGHT WORTHY, CAVALEIRO, MINIMISE RISK and RUGGED CROSS are the other contenders.
CAMELOT, who is favourite after a late charge to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, is seeking to make history in the Classic.
It is believed no father/son combination has ever won the Derby and 19-year-old Joseph rides for his dad, Aidan.
O'Brien has decided to run IMPERIAL MONARCH in Sunday's French Derby rather than the Epsom version.
Second favourite BONFIRE, winner of the Dante Stakes at York in May, and stable-companion MINIMISE RISK are the first contenders in the race for trainer Andrew Balding.
Lingfield Derby Trial winner MAIN SEQUENCE is unbeaten in in four starts and gives trainer David Lanigan his first Epsom Derby runner. Meanwhile, Hayley Turner will become only the second woman to ride in the famous race when she partners CAVALEIR. Alex Greaves was the first in 1996, her mount PORTUGUESE LIL finishing last.
Today at Epsom, O'Brien and his son, Joseph, should kick off a memorable weekend with MAYBE (5-2) in the Group I Investec Oaks over 12 furlongs to be contested by 14 starters. MAYBE was third in the recent 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.
