Same taxpayers subsidise others

THE EDITOR, Sir:

This is an open letter to the Government of Jamaica.

I am a 64-year-old citizen of Jamaica. I pay rent at the premises I live. My son pays part of the rent for me because I don't earn enough money to cover my monthly bills.

I operate a legal school bus, so I am required to pay taxes. If I don't pay taxes, the Government can take me to court and seize my vehicle for taxes owing. That would leave me with nothing from which to earn.

The same Government allows 60 per cent of the operators to be illegal. My question is this: How will the 40 per cent legal operators earn enough to pay taxes, yet my fitness and registration fees go up by 50 per cent?

What must I do? Jump off a building? Why is it those who abide by the law are the ones who get shafted?
