A MOTHER has been charged with manslaughter arising from the death of her three-month-old baby boy in January last year.

A six-member jury found Lillieth Palmer of Clarkes Street, Mount Salem, St James, criminally responsible for the death.

The jury heard depositions on Wednesday in the Montego Bay Coroner's Court that Palmer left the baby, along with her two other young children, ages five and six, on the bed in her Clarkes Street home on the night of January 18, 2011 to go to a "cookshop up the road". She returned shortly afterwards to find the baby under the bed and "not moving". The mother rushed the child to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. A doctor at Cornwall Regional Hospital called the police.

The post-mortem report showed that the child died from a "cerebral concussion".

Following the jury's verdict, Palmer was offered bail in the sum of $150,000 and is to return to court on June 13 when the matter will be mentioned.
