Sunday race meets cancelled
The Sunday meet scheduled for June 10 at Caymanas Park has been pushed back to Wednesday, June 13.
Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) had scheduled four Sunday meets for this year, the first having commenced on January 29 with large crowd support.
The other dates were Sunday, June 10, Sunday, July 8 and Sunday, December 16.
But according to CTL's racing secretary Denzil Miller Jr, the upcoming meet was pushed back to next Wednesday on a directive from the board.
Regarding the July 8 meet, Miller disclosed that CTL will make a request to the Jamaica Racing Commission for it to be to resche-duled for the following Wednesday.
Franz Jobson, CEO of Caymanas Track Limited, weighed in on the issue:
"At this time, Sunday racing is off the table until the Government gives its permission for us to operate our OTBs on a Sunday," he disclosed.
Jobson went on to explain that CTL had been waiting for some time for the Government to make a decision on the OTBs, but this has not been forthcoming.
Despite large crowds for the four previous Sunday meets, they lost money without the off-track component (CTL operates 61 OTBs islandwide).
Since the previous government gave the green light for Sunday racing to commence on a trial basis in 2009, minus the provision of off-track betting to appease the Church, there has been only four.
The historic first meet, which attracted a record at Caymanas Park, was held on November 29, 2009 and this was followed a fortnight later by another meet on December 13.
Despite the promising start, no Sunday meet was scheduled for 2010, but it came back on stream on January 28 last year, while four were carded for this year. Now the last three have been dropped.
