Improve sports journalism!

Published:Tuesday | June 12, 2012 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Is Orville Higgins a one-man peer-review panel for his colleagues? I thought no one else noticed the poor standards and generally sloppy work of some of our so-called sports journalists - for want of a better name - especially the ones in broadcasting.

Higgins' article of Friday, May 25, 2012, 'Are sports reporters up to scratch?', is right on target. By saying his piece he should not be afraid of the enemies he'll make among his colleagues, because John Public wanted to say the same thing but didn't have a medium.

I also believe that media managers should take some of the blame for this sloppiness as, for too long, they have heard the public's complaints but have chosen to do nothing about it. Now it has become accepted as the norm for some people.

Higgins should keep on speaking out and maybe we'll one day wake up to a new day of informed, professionally presented sports broadcasts.
