Fujitsu has been awarded the 21st Century Achievement Award for its fast and innovative response to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Using information technology, Fujitsu responded immediately on March 11, 2011, to ensure social, industrial, economic and educational infrastructure was available in the wake of the natural disaster. Fujitsu was selected from a pool of 20 finalists in the Environment category; it was the only Japanese company nominated in 2012, and one of only three non-US based companies.

When the earthquake hit, the Fujitsu disaster support teams quickly developed a cloud-based, real-time information solution - spanning hardware, software and services - that allowed evacuation centres to align the efforts of non-profit organisations with the concrete needs of disaster victims. Beyond enterprise solutions, Fujitsu offered 2,000 LIFEBOOK notebooks/Tablet PCs to 100 evacuation centres, giving locals access to the Internet, real-time information and safety information, allowing for communication with families to stay in touch with evacuees from outside the disaster area.

For 24 years, IDG's Computerworld Honorus programme has been recognising those organisations that create and use information technology to promote and advance the public welfare, benefit society, and change the world for the better.

Alison Rowe, global executive director, sustainability, international business, Fujitsu Limited says: "The 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan was a tragedy but yet a catalyst for Fujitsu; we were able to respond quickly and effectively to a disaster of great and global magnitude. Through that, we learned vast amounts from our disaster-response teams and have channelled the experience we gained into our business-continuity plans for our customers. The recognition from Computerworld Honors and IDG is invaluable and we are grateful for their commitment to acknowledging those companies successfully using technology to create a better world."
