Get ready to grill

Grills are being fired up for Jamaica's premier annual grilling competition, Appleton All Jamaica Grill Off, this Father's Day Sunday, June 17.

Slated for Hope Gardens, the event will see 21 grilling teams, including a combination of home cooks, creative minds and more experienced chefs, vying for the title of grill champion.

The Western Grillers should be ready to turn on the heat as they return to defend their title.

Most important, patrons will get to sample food from the teams all day long.

"Title sponsor Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum will be providing drink specials all day as well as being the inspiration for fabulous BBQ sauces," said Danielle Neil, event assistant.

Usually a great event for the foodie at heart, families can gather by the grill and enjoy a laid-back time.

"It's a wonderful event in a cool and casual setting that will allow fathers to come out and be able to unwind in a relaxing atmosphere," Neil said. "What better way to man's heart than through his stomach?"

Children under seven enter free.

"The Cran Wata Kiddies Village will have double the amount of rides than last year and will be giving out freePopsicles to children," Neil said.

Patrons will also get the opportunity to browse an emporium where small businesses will be showcasing their products and offering samples, plus the option to buy. These will include Flavours Express, Live Juice Bar and Kuke (cupcake producers) and Honey Bun, which will be promoting their shorty bread.

Tickets are available Di Grill Shack, Flirt Boutique and Tracks and Records. Adult presold tickets are $2,000, children 8-16, $1,000 presold. Tickets $2,500 for adults and $1,500 for children at the gate.

The first All Island Grill Off was hosted in 2007. Winners from the local competition will represent Jamaica in the American Royal Associations Annual World Series of BBQ in October.
