Spend less on Jamaica 50 celebration

Published:Saturday | June 23, 2012 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am rather upset after reading The Gleaner of Thursday, June 21, 2012 and seeing that Parliament signed off on a $70-million contract with Jambiz for the Independence Gala.

Yes, it's 50 years, but why should a bunch of people be charging so much? Why can't the Government think of cheaper strategies, like utilising the country's resources - both human and non-human?

I am sick of the unnecessary spending. Why not target persons to contribute towards the project?

My school needs two classrooms and I can't get them. Students have to be learning under trees for classes, and you have to send home an entire grade when exams like CXC mathematics and English are being sat.

I'm proud to be a Jamaican, but I don't think or believe the 50th anniversary celebrations should cost so much.
