Bring Babsy on-board

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Fifty years does not come upon one suddenly. I am at a loss, therefore, as to the controversy surrounding the celebration of such a milestone in our country.

With all due respect to the current administration, I believe a major contributory factor to this controversy has to do with seeking to change the template cast by the previous administration for the celebration instead of building on it.

Now, we are less than 50 days away, and we find private businesses and overseas interests are way ahead with their planning for such event while the Government appears to be confused.

With regard to the song dispute, I believe it is not too late to draw on the talent of some of our former Festival song winners who would generate some interest in Jamaicans everywhere. Persons like Toots Hilbert, Roy Rayon, Tinga Stewart, Tommy Cowan, Eric Donaldson, to mention a few. I would even consider Ernie Smith and Freddie McGregor. Most of these persons would have been around for more than 50 years, anyhow.

Finally, in some things we have to put differences and political affiliation aside and put country first. In so doing, it is my opinion that Ms Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, with her vast knowledge of successfully planning and executing such events, could be asked to sit on the committee planning the Jamaica 50 celebrations.
