Defending JIS

The Gleaner's 'Thursday Talk' took an unfair swipe at the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) with the headline 'Shame on You'.

Our information technology team has been aware of this occurrence for some time, where Mr Bruce Golding's image accompanies news stories that are linked to the JIS website from Google Alerts. We have done our research and it is clearly a Google error relating to the way in which Google distributes its alerts.

As the Government's premier information agency, we are wide awake as we take our mandate seriously to ensure that the Government of Jamaica is accurately represented, and we also have a brand to protect.

The website is regularly audited. It is, therefore, inexplicable that the same image of former Prime Minister Bruce Golding appears with every news release that is picked up by Google Alerts from the JIS website.

In the case of the JIS, while setting up the alert, we verified that Google picked up the correct image, where a GSAT story is accompanied by a photo of Minister Thwaites and Minister Falconer at the Jamaica House briefings. Google has failed to deliver that correct image to the subscribers.

The JIS is contacting Google to report and correct the error.
