Gays being attacked left, right and centre
THE EDITOR, Sir:
There was a news item on CVM TV on Thursday, June 21, about a mob attack on a house in the inner-city community of Jones Town. The reason for this attempted home invasion was that the residents of the house were supposedly gay.
When the police arrived to rescue the inhabitants, the crowd complained bitterly that their tax dollars were being used to transport homosexuals.
Despite now almost daily news reports of homophobic attacks, many persons in Jamaica (including senior politicians, policymakers and pastors) still argue vociferously and incredulously that gays are attacking themselves (perhaps in some sort of mad suicide pact).
I say that every time a homosexual is assaulted, or worse, killed in Jamaica, we should acknowledge the role played by chief national homophobes as well as their lobby groups. It is their steady diet of hate and intolerance which makes such attacks possible.
The philosophies of such anti-gay groups are loosely interpreted by marauding homophobic mobs as 'kill first and ask questions later!' For mob members, redemption for a deviant gay will clearly only happen in heaven, and it is the mob's duty to speed him on his way to glory.
