CIGARETTE MANUFACTURERS have six months from July 15 to print graphic images about the effects of smoking on the body, on to packages containing their products.

Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson told The Gleaner yesterday that the six-month window was to give manufacturers the opportunity to make the necessary changes.

"Graphic images have been know to prevent persons who would want to start smoking and help people who already smoke stop smoking," Ferguson told The Gleaner yesterday.

The minister on Tuesday announced that as of July 15, no smoking will be permitted in public spaces across Jamaica. He said the regulations to give effect to the ban are currently being gazetted. Those regulations will outline areas deemed as public areas as well as how the new law will be operationalised.
