Western Bureau:

Four illegal guns are off the streets of Montego Bay, St James, and two men are in custody, following a raid in the Green Pond district by the Mount Salem Police yesterday morning.

The raid, which was carried out in Burch Hill, Green Pond, resulted in a Glock 9mm pistol, a Beretta 9mm pistol, an Intra-Tek 9mm pistol and a Bushmaster 5.56mm rifle as well as approximately 84 assorted rounds of ammunition being seized from an occupied house in the area, and the subsequent arrest of the men, who remain unidentified.

"About 10:45 a.m., the Mount Salem Police carried out a raid in the Burch Hill area of Green Pond, where the four weapons were seized and, in total, 72 9mm rounds and 12 5.56mm rounds were seized," said Sergeant Peter Salkey, communication liaison officer for the St James division. "They have in their custody two men that they are questioning in connection with this find."

Salkey emphasised the need for residents to cooperate with the police in order to get more illegal weapons out of the hands of criminals.

"We are asking persons who may have information that can be given to the police to give it, so we can go and find these weapons," said Salkey. "It is very important, and we believe that more guns off the streets means safer communities for everybody. Give us the information, and we will go for the weapons."
