Spring heralds the start of the outdoor entertaining season - from garden parties to outdoor barbecues, and let's not forget afternoon tea parties.

In our 'Spring is here - March to-do list' article on the blog, we gave you tips on how to get your home 'spring ready' as entertaining in spring is very different from entertaining during any other season.

In spring, there are different weather considerations, different decor choices and, of course, different menu items. But, don't worry, there are some items that will work just fine for summer as well.

Here are some essentials to keep your spring outdoor parties running smoothly, organised and, of course, stylish. In the spirit of the new season, let's 'spring into style', get out, and enjoy!

1. Functional table

Make your life easier by having a serving table where you can present food and drinks. It allows guests to take what they want and makes it easier to spot if more food needs to be brought out.

2. Mugs/jars

Serve up cool lemonade, iced tea or frosty cocktails in charming, rustic jars/mugs. They are extremely versatile and, not to mention, stylish.

3. Soft cushions/throw pillows

Patio furniture has come a long way. It is larger and much more comfortable with plush seating and back cushions. But if you have wooden, iron or metallic table sets, get some seat cushions to add comfort to your outdoor party. It also gives you the chance to add a pop of colour and/or patterns.

4. Music player

Music instantly sets the mood of any party, so ensure you have a great outdoor music player with a few playlists saved.

5. Protective shade

Because of the warm and cold air floating around during spring, the weather can sometimes be unpredictable. If you don't have a patio table or deck, you can get outdoor umbrellas that stand on their own. But if you entertain often, you can consider getting a canopy/tent.

6. Extra lighting

Your garden party may stretch past daylight hours, so you may need extra lighting. Paper lanterns are perfect for spring - they are beautiful, fun, and easy to put up and take down.

7. Table linens

Nothing says spring more than floral and brightly patterned table linens. Traditional pastel colours are still in, but to add a pop of colour, pair your pastel-coloured accessories with vivid brights to create a wonderful equilibrium. Suggested spring 2014 'vivid brights' include - radiant orchid, cayenne, celosia orange, dazzling blue, and freesia.

8. Cooler

Keep your guests cool and quenched with an outdoor cooler - this is especially perfect when entertaining a group.
