Focus on maths, English for a better society

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In today's age, what Bruce Golding has suggested is critical for a vibrant and balanced society. We will forever be tormented and humbugged by unemployment and underemployment if we don't take some vital steps towards fine-tuning our chances for future prosperity.

Our former prime minister said core subjects like mathematics and English should be taught solely to some students for them to grasp these vital concepts.

If we could harness the talents of our schoolchildren in a very businesslike manner, our economy would see sustainable and significant growth.

We could be more competitive internationally and more credibly target our Vision 2030 goals.

With the building of our logistics hub, we are going to need all the expertise available to fill in the most crucial areas for us to say this hub is fully Jamaican.

The Ministry of Education could play a crucial role in the success of this initiative. We should ensure that politicking does not derail the programme, because this should be a national effort.
