WESTERN BUREAU:The Bethel Primary and Junior High School and Sandy Bay Primary School started off on a winning note as the first round of matches in the Hanover Cooperative Credit Union's (HCCU) Academic Quiz Competition got under way on Tuesday.

Bethlel scored 25 points to defeat Maryland All-age School, who scored 13, while Sandy Bay were 29-16 winners over Watford Hill Primary School.

According to marketing officer at the HCCU, Salome Scarlett, the quiz competition was established to enable young savers at the HCCU to learn the philosophies of the Credit Union Movement.

"It is not just about savings and loans, but also the spirit of volunteerism and cooperative spirit of each one helping the other," Scarlett said. "We have our youth savers who just save and may not know much about the credit union. Most of them don't come to the credit union to do their transactions because we go into the schools," Scarlett said.

"So we are trying to get them to learn some of the philosophies of the credit union. It's not just about a loan or savings. It is also the fact that it is the members that own it. It is also important for them to understand where it started, how it grew from where it was to now, and also to get them to understand that as soon as they become adults, they can come and take advantage of the products and services that we have," she added.

Scarlett said the winning school will take home a $50,000 cash prize. The other teams participating in the competiton are Askenish All-Age, Green Island High, St Simon, Lucea, and Esher primary schools.
