Internship programme launched ... by revamped UWI Marketing Association

THE UNIVERSITY of the West Indies Marketing Association (UMA) has taken another bold step forward in the development of the nation's youth by launching an internship programme for students.

"Today, I can say that birth has been given to the UMA Internship Programme, and my main objective has been achieved. Thank you to our partners, as students will now receive the nurturing and experience which will make it easy to transition directly into the workforce after graduating," Stephen Reid, president of the UMA, told The Gleaner.

The UWI Marketing Asso-ciation was relaunched last year and it was made clear that their aim was to create hundreds of internships and job opportunities for students enrolled at the institution.

The internship programme will have a unique twist where students will choose the category in which they want to work through the inaugural UMA marketing plan competition.


Students will submit marketing plans based on the topic submitted by the partners, then will be shortlisted for interviews. Vice-president of corporate relations and special initiatives, Zachary Chung, explained this decision.

"One of the main goals of the UMA was to provide a practical and hands-on approach to marketing. We decided to test the students' skill sets and see how they work on specific projects. This way, they get experience and our partners get to see how they work and think before they actually get the position," said Chung.

Terry-Ann Burrell, marketing, public relations and sponsorship manager at Jamaica Beverages, expressed delight at being part of the programme.

"Developing young minds and helping them to realise their potential is a key focus for us at Jamaica Beverages, so we are very excited about this partnership with UMA," she said.

"Partnerships like these also help us to feel positive about the future of our nation and the calibre of fresh young minds that will enter the workforce in a few years to come," Burrell added.

The competition began on May 18, with submissions closing on May 28, with the top five marketing plans for each category being shortlisted for an interview process.
