Israelis experts on ganja? Wow!
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I was impressed by the range of expert speakers coming in from Israel, the United States, China, Canada and elsewhere at the recent Cannabis Conference held at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
I took special note of the presentations by the Israeli speakers, who are the world-leading experts on medical ganja and are on the cutting edge of the science behind it.
It is frankly an indictment on Jamaica that Israel, a country hardly linked to ganja, is the world's pioneer in its research, while Jamaica continues to waste our potential because of gross inaction from our country's leaders.
Now, despite the positive experiences, I was concerned about the presentations by a newly formed medical ganja and herbal com-pany. Call it overzealousness on their part or just barefaced exaggeration, one of the com-pany's associates, a local science researcher, boasted about holding an international patent for a well-known Jamaican herb.
This, to me, was a low point, as my research failed to confirm this. I urge the conference organisers to then ensure that substantial due diligence is done on some of the 'experts' here.
