Westmoreland, St Bess roadDouble standard with JUTC buses

Published:Saturday | May 31, 2014 | 12:00 AM

I recently travelled on a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus from the Spanish Town terminus to a Twickenham Park destination. On arrival at my stop, I politely requested the driver to open the side door as my seat was adjacent to that door. I was shocked when I was told that the door could not be opened as it was malfunctioning.

I mumbled aloud about the unsafe situation should there be an emergency. I alighted at my stop and proceeded to walk down Norman Manley Drive past the JUTC bus depot to the bypass road where a Ministry of Transport vehicle-inspection team was busy confiscating privately owned vehicles for probably much more minor vehicular defects than existed on the JUTC bus.

It seems that double standards are being applied.
