Cool & breezy pantalones

A graphic print jumpsuit with a broad-rim felt hat and a broad black belt - a skinny one would be lost in this print.
A denim jumpsuit in lightweight fabric gets a sophisticated touch with peep-toe platform pumps in a bold carrot-red colour. A colour-blocked neoprene envelope clutch and the floral printturban bun tie the look together.
Bold tropical navy palazzo pants paired with this neon camisole gives a striking contrast and a fresh alternative to red.

For the hot days ahead, there are some very stylish pants that will not only keep you cool and comfortable, but are also a great alternative to summer dresses.

Palazzo trousers are popular as a summer trend, as they are loose with extremely wide legs that flare out from the waist and tend to be flattering in light flowing fabrics that are breathable in hot weather. A shorter knee-length version of palazzo pants is called a culotte.

Jumpsuits, also known as 'playsuits' were once known only as the uniforms for skydivers and race-car drivers. However, jumpsuits take centre stage in the pants category this season, because they give an unbroken line to a woman's body and in one jumpsuit you have an entire outfit which only needs accessories.

Things to consider when buying pants:

Length: Best thing to know when buying or altering a pair of dress pants, is that the same pants cannot be worn and look tailored with heels and flats. In either case, the length of the pants should be just above the ground and almost sweeping the ground - in either case elongating your features.

Style: Knowing which style of pants best suits your body type is key. Pants come in various styles such as high-waist, cropped wide, tuxedo, yoga, jogging or the one that is most difficult to carry off, cropped wide-leg pants.

Fabric: Different fabrics can actually highlight flaws (cellulite) and add bulk if the fabric is too thick. So it is key to choose pants in the right fabric that fits the body and flows with gentle movement.

Pockets: Where pockets are located on a pair of pants is something to consider because sometimes pockets can add weight and bulk in the wrong areas. Sometimes it is recommended to sew them down, or have them professionally removed.

Rise: The distance from the crotch to the waist is key in understanding how pants or shorts will sit on your body. If the rise is too long, there will be a gap in the front, if it is too short it will be unflattering. This is why there are different categories of rises: 'low-rise, mid-rise and high-rise'- understanding this wardrobe conundrum is the key to making the right choice.

Colour: choosing a lighter fabric for pants can give the illusion of longer legs, and if your legs are your best feature, it's a great way to highlight your best asset.

Print: Choosing the right print is a personal decision and is an excellent way to minimise flaws. Based on your preferences, choose prints that reflect your personality and those that lift your spirits. Hawaiian, nautical stripes and dark florals are now trending for the summer months ahead.
