MONTEGO BAY, St James:The St James Parish Council has opened nominations for the 2014 Spirit of Independence Award, which honours individuals or groups that have given outstanding service to the parish.

The Spirit of Independence Award seeks to identify and highlight persons for their contribution to the economic, social, cultural, or political development of the western parish. The award is also open to natives from the parish who reside overseas.

Members of the public are encouraged to submit their nominations along with an up-to-date biographical note or résumé by July 18, 2014, in order for nominees to be considered. Self-nomination and recommendations for previous national honours and awards recipients will not be accepted.

Ten awardees will be presented with commemorative plaques at the annual civic ceremony that will mark Jamaica's 52nd anniversary of Independence on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at the historic Sam Sharpe Square.

The Spirit of Independence Award was established in 2012 by the St James Jamaica 50 committee to show appreciation to persons for their service to St James.

Interested persons may collect application forms from the St James Parish Council offices located at 19A Union Street in Montego Bay or from the Social Development Commission (SDC) parish office in Albion.
