Blood for the Bank
Private security giant, Guardsman Group, will partner with the Blood Bank on Tuesday, July 29, to host a blood drive.
The drive is scheduled for the company's group headquarters, Old Hope Road. Guardsman, a perennial good corporate citizen, is seeking to help reduce the deficit in the 60,000 units that the bank needs, creating a reserve for thousands of Guardsman employees and their families.
The drive will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Debra Griffiths, marketing and advertising assistant, Guardsman, said staff will be wearing red to mark the occasion.
"There are also various preceding activities including a sensitisation session with staff members to inform them about the benefits of giving blood, the national need for donated blood, the donation process and the various requirements of donors before giving blood," she said. "We aim to have more than 60 donors at the blood drive, which will give the blood bank more than 60 pints of blood." Griffiths said members of the public are invited to donate, but asked that these persons come as guests of Guardsman employees.
Whereas the company has had smaller-scale drives, Griffiths said this was the first time Guardsman would be hosting one of this magnitude.
"This will become a regular event of the Guardsman Group," she said. "It is our intention to host our blood drive on an annual basis and to expand its reach islandwide."
Data from the Blood Bank suggests giving blood improves circulation, as new blood replaces blood donated.
Post donation, the Blood Bank recommends continuous fluid intake, over 48 hours, to fully restore the body.
Blood donation also burns extra calories and reduces cholesterol level. Donors must be, generally, between the ages of 17 and 60, weigh at least 110 lbs (50 kgs), or more, and must be in relatively good health.
The Blood Bank recommends potential donors bring their TRN card as it aids with registration and is a form of ID.
