Logwood Early Childhood graduation strikes a high note

The Logwood Church of God could barely hold the scores of residents who turned out at the Logwood Early Childhood Institution's school leaving and prize-giving ceremony last week Thursday.

Thirteen boys and 21 girls, ages five and six, participated in the graduation exercise. All will move on to grade one at primary school in September.

The ceremony was held under the theme 'Break the Cycle, Take Responsibility Today'. In her address, chairman of the Logwood Early Childhood Institution Board Monica Luckoo encouraged parents to promote the development of literacy skills in their children.

"Let them visit a library even once per month. Some parents will design an environment that is conducive to the teaching or learning in the homes, while others will have an idea of the general development but refuse to bring about the idea to make it a reality. Stimulate the children's interest by setting up reading corners in the home. Make every effort to read and have some form of discussions that relates to the welfare of the child," she said.

Reinforce value of education

"I implore you parents and guardians to reinforce the value of education. You need to realise the changes in our culture and reclaim and manage your responsibilities effectively. One of our challenges facing the institutions is the lack of parental support, and this is often reflected in the small number of parents who attend parent teachers association meetings," she added.

Many awards were presented to students, community members, and parents during the ceremony, among them, mothers Nordia Campbell and Gillian Buchanan, who jointly copped the parents of the year award. A resounding round of applause was evoked when two five-year-old girls ,Travenna Donaldson and her classmate Kamoya Donaldson, jointly read a message, several pages long, to their fellow graduands, which showed that they were reading several grades above their level.
