Special day for grooms
Tomorrow's Grooms' Day race meet at Caymanas Park, sponsored for the first time by L.P. Azar Limited, will be highlighted by the annual renewal of the Grooms' Association of Jamaica Trophy (claiming $350,00-$300,000) race over the straight five course.
This renewal of Grooms' Day is seen as something special by the association president Fabian White, who lauded title sponsor L.P. Azar for stepping up to the plate on behalf of its membership.
At the recent launch (July 17) in the Trainers' Room at Caymanas Park, the grooms of each classic winner during the recently concluded campaign were honoured with bicycles donated by CTL director Andrew Azar on behalf of L.P. Azar Limited.
They included the groom of Derby and St. Leger winner RELAMPAGO - Kevin Williams - and the groom of 2000 Guineas hero and Lotto Classic winner TALENTED TONY K - Maurice Hart. Grooms of the runners-up and third place horses in the classics and Governor's Cup also won fans and BBQ grills respectively.
A raffle was also held at the launch and three lucky grooms as well as a trainer received prizes, including bicycles and a 28-inch flat screen TV, courtesy of L.P. Azar Limited.
Azar announced that long service grooms will be honoured during the race meet. Each race on the card will be named after a veteran groom who is still active in the profession, champion grooms such as Roy Vassell, Gerald Harrison and Cecil Chambers, who over the past 30 years have been associated with some outstanding horses.
Associate sponsors for Grooms' Day are Cal's Manufacturing, who will donate product prizes and McKay Security Limited, who will provide the entertainment.
