LETTER OF THE DAY - Independence deception

THE EDITOR, Sir: Is Jamaica independent? Independent of what? Whom? Or which country?
The Jamaica Independence Act, 1962 states precisely that as from the 6th day of August, 1962, Her Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom shall have no responsibility for the Government of Jamaica.
Minister Bunting, in his recent comments on Com-missioner Ellington's resignation, said the report by the public defender of the security forces' operation in west Kingston in May 2010 led to some international partners reviewing their support to the security forces - not to compromise the general operational effectiveness of the security forces, but support to a few specific units.
Assuming that the international partners' unease have led to the resignation of Commissioner Ellington, probably he felt expendable in light of the necessary funding and their desire to ensure human rights for all people.
If the commissioner felt compelled to resign, it may be that our national security minister will need to secure the international partners' approval of the new commissioner - someone who conforms to their standards of human rights. Think on these things.
Assuming that our international partners are Americans, have we become independent of Britain only to be dependent on the United States?
double whammy
On the other hand, if they are both British and American, that is a double whammy, for Jamaica would have scorned colonialism for independence, only to lap its tail and return for assistance. Furthermore, Jamaica would be submitting to America's system of belief. The mind boggles to think of any other option(s) there might be.
Are common Jamaicans entitled to know the identity of these international partners?
In order to secure funding, what has Jamaica pledged to give, uphold or surrender?
What will Jamaica celebrate on August 6, 2014?
