Ed. Ministry to provide more school spaces
The Education Ministry said it intends to provide approximately 20,000 infant, primary and high school spaces by 2009 to ease the shortage at some institutions.
Head of the School Facilities and Infrastructure arm of the Education Transformation Team, Claude Stewart said there are currently 12 schools at different phases of construction.
He said 5,000 school spaces have already been provided at a cost of approximately $300 million.
Mr. Stewart reported that all the schools being built are designed for easy access by the physically challenged.
He also said 16 schools are also being expanded and upgraded, while 27 additional classroom blocks are under construction.
Mr. Stewart said repairs have been completed at 500 schools, which were damaged by either Hurricane Ivan or Dean, and another 200 have been identified for repairs.
