Broadcasting Commission to grant second cable licence

The Broadcasting Commission is seeking to grant a second licence for provision of all-island cable service using wireless technology.

The commission hopes that this will enhance competition in the cable television sector, following the announcement that telecommunications company FLOW has acquired another cable company.

Entertainment Systems Limited is FLOW’s eighth acquisition.

An islandwide wireless licence was granted to N5 Systems Limited in 2002, but the licence was voided last year due to the company’s non-performance.

The commission said arrangements are underway to licence another wireless player to replace that entity.

The Commission is expected to make a public announcement, about developments in the cable television sector at a news conference this afternoon.
