The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) Mona is currently without the service of its elevator to the Labour Ward.

The women who are to be admitted to the hospital to give birth, have to be lifted up t two flights of stairs to the Labour Ward.

The porters, who have been lifting the women, said they are no longer able to do so, because of the resulting physical discomfort.

Director of Clinical Services at the Hospital, Dr. Trevor McCartney said the problem is the result of a power outage on Sunday.

Dr. McCartney sought to assure that the current situation has not resulted in any serious problems for the expectant mothers.

He said an elevator crew is currently at the hospital to address the problem, and promised that the service should be restored by weekend.
