Help for farmers
Farmers whose crops and farmlands were destroyed by fire in St. Elizabeth last week are to receive help from the government today.
Farm supplies including fertiliser, vegetable seeds and thyme and escallion plantlets are to be distributed to affected farmers.
The Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) said it would also be providing tractor services to assist the farmers to clear land.
87 farmers lost agricultural produce as well as livestock including 64 goats during the fires.
Approximately $26 million was lost during the fire, which affected more than 250 acres of land in the communities of Malvern, Bogue, Elgin, Bigwoods, Barton and Junction.
President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society, JAS senator Norman Grant says the decision by government to assist the farmers is commendable.
