United States First Lady Laura Bush is visiting Haiti on her first official tour of the impoverished, French-speaking Caribbean country.

The White House said Haiti is the first stop of a two-nation tour that also takes Mrs. Bush to Mexico.

Spokeswoman Dan Perino said the US first lady would highlight US assistance to fight HIV/AIDS and breast cancer, and promote education while visiting both countries.

Washington is helping Haiti with its HIV/AIDS programme through President Bush\'s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

The United States House of Representatives committee voted to triple spending in addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the Caribbean.
