NSWMA to license garbage collectors

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) will soon be licensing garbage collectors.

Head of the NSWMA, Joan Gordon- Webley, said this is part of the Authority’s drive towards clamping down on the improper disposal of garbage.

Mrs. Gordon Webley said short-term measures would be put in place to ensure garbage collectors dump waste in the proper places.

She revealed that there has already been one arrest on the North Coast, in relation to illegal disposal of garbage.

Mrs. Gordon Webley is also calling for greater involvement of the NSWMA in the approval process for new developments. Currently, developers are only required to consult with the NSWMA after approval has been granted by other agencies.

Mrs. Gordon Webley said involvement during the planning stages of a development would help the NSWMA in crafting an appropriate waste management plan.
