The Ministry of Education is moving to enhance the literacy levels of children at the primary level.

The ministry said changes are being instituted at the primary level for the assessments at Grades 1, 3 & 4, and an evaluation of aspects of the Grade 6 test has begun.

There are also plans to improve the Grade 9 assessments.

Education Minister, Andrew Holness said the ministry wants to ensure that the students are literate by the time they reach the secondary level.

The ministry said a timetable has been established to effect significant changes in time for the 2009/2010 school year. The Junior High School Certificate Examination has also been discontinued.

Grade 9 students in Primary & Junior High Schools will therefore only sit the English and Mathematics papers of the Grade Nine Achievement Test.
