NWC to collect outstanding payments

The National Water Commission (NWC) said it would be continuing its drive to collect outstanding money owed by individuals and companies.

Corporate Public Relations Manager at the NWC, Charles Buchanan said about 30 percent of Jamaica’s general water supply is unpaid.

Mr. Buchanan said the NWC is also faced with the challenge of regulating illegal connections to its water supply system.

He said they are also putting measures in place to increase access to piped water in rural areas.

Approximately 85 percent of Jamaica’s population has reasonable access to treated water supply.

The NWC is seeking a 44 percent increase in water rates. The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) is to decide on what percentage will be granted.
