The United Nations Agency for Refugees, (UNHCR), is today hosting a meeting in Costa Rica to discuss the plight of refugees in the Caribbean.

The UN body said hundreds of people from Africa, The Middle East and Sri Lanka pass through the region with the hope of getting to the United States, but are left stranded in Caribbean islands.

Tim Irwin of the UNHCR said today’s talks are aimed at raising awareness that many are genuine refugees and should not be treated as illegal economic migrants.
