The cruise ship, Grand Princess, left Jamaica’s coast yesterday evening after the crew managed to extinguish a fire onboard.

Passengers received a scare yesterday afternoon after the fire broke out aboard the vessel forcing a lengthy delay off the coast of St. Ann.

Residents in the Salem/ Runaway Bay area were alerted to the fire when they saw clouds of thick black smoke billowing from the ship shortly after 4 p.m.

The ship, which was travelling in a westerly direction after departing the port of Ocho Rios, came to a halt off the Runaway Bay coast for approximately 20 minutes, while the crew successfully battled the blaze.

Tamara Small a bartender on the Salem beach was among scores of residents who viewed the situation from the coast.

The cause of the fire or the extent of the damage could not be ascertained.

However, personnel from the Jamaica Defence Force coast guard who were in contact with the ship’s crew report that the situation was brought under control.
